On Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2026, Advocate staffers Ben Goldman and Paloma Rednowers went to see Song Sung Blue at Landmark Theatre in Bethesda, MD. They wanted to share their impressions of the movie with you.
Ben Goldman:
Song Sung Blue was a movie starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson and directed by Craig Brewer. It is based on the documentary of the same name, and the story is about a married couple who performed in a Niel Diamond tribute band named, Lighting and Thunder. Their band had a successful music career as far as cover bands go.
The movie had a lot of emotional singing, and Jackman and Hudson had good chemistry. For most of the movie, I couldn’t get the image of Jackman as Wolverine out of my head which made me think this was just a romance movie with Wolverine.
I really enjoyed every scene; the music was catchy and put me in a good mood. Despite the movie being two hours, I felt the music really helped with the movie’s pacing. I was a fan of Diamond before this movie and I would recommend this movie to anyone even if they didn’t know who Diamond was. Song Sung Blue was filled with emotional moments that I won’t spoil here. You will just have to watch it to find out.
I would definitely recommend this film to documentary and music fans alike. The direction was beautiful. You can still catch it in some theaters, or on some streaming services. Overall, I’m giving this movie 5/5 stars.
Paloma Rednowers:
I liked seeing Jackman in a role that wasn’t a Superman movie and Hudson not in a romantic movie. I liked seeing both of these actors show themselves in a more serious emotionally loaded role.
I liked the music, and I liked that it introduced me to Diamond’s discography.
