We see, hear, and talk about fashion all the time- but do we really know what it means? Well, let’s say we forget what the dictionary says and instead, ask ourselves what it means. Only then can we truly define it, because the true meaning of that word is, in fact, within us.
Perhaps we would define fashion as a practice, a way of expressing ourselves, another way to “speak” to people and give this unique statement. In practicing what we would call “fashion,” we are playing with various styles of clothing and our appearance. More importantly, however, we are essentially taking what we have to “make” it our own.
Also, being an art form, fashion is the ability to put particular ideas together. This is done when we are associating beautiful fabrics, textures, colors, and designs to create “artistry” or beauty.
The basic concept of fashion is “to be comfortable in our own skin.” Coco Chanel had defined it this way: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street; fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” In other words, fashion is something that can be found at only the very heart of every individual and surrounding; it is something that can be found in our personalities and in the cities we live in.
