Men’s basketball edges out Cecil College in overtime

Coach James Byson’s Raptors pulled out a tight overtime victory as Montgomery College defeated Cecil College 83-79.

Led by the intensity of Alex Chike and the scoring of Timothy Christian with 18 points and Andre Gains with 19 points, the Raptors overcame a poor shooting night from the field.

Gains collapsed the opposing defense while Christian spread the floor with four three-pointers. Throughout the night, Byson yelled “ball fakes get the gaps!” It sank in as players were continually fed the ball as they drove the baseline. Despite lackluster shooting, the Raptors posted 83 points, relying heavily on offensive rebounds and put-backs, including a monstrous jam by Christian after a missed shot.

The largest challenge of the night came from Cecil’s Steadman Allen, who led the Seahawks with 21 points. He led the game with 8 field goals.

As the crowd revved for overtime, the Raptors had balls bounce in their favor. The Raptor’s converted turnovers and fouls from the Seahawks into a large enough lead to squeak by. In the final seconds, Chike closed with two free throws to clinch the victory.
