MC’S Day of Code

On Thursday, April 5. 2018, the Software Development Club hosted MC’S Day Of Code.

According to Eric Le, the current Vice President of the software development club, this event was a continuation of “MC’S Week of Code,” which was started last year.

On “MC’S Day of Code,” there were workshop sessions. The officers and members of the software development club taught Montgomery College students how to write code in C++, Java, Python and scratch.

Two main guest speakers were invited to speak at the event. They invited Mr. Sonny Discini – a security expert and Mr. Ramsey Khadder – a full-time software engineer in Xbox. They both spoke about their careers and gave tips on how to be successful in the field of computer science and cybersecurity. DR. Nawal Benmouna, Department Chair of the Engineering, Physical, and Computer Sciences Department at Montgomery College spoke about Women in STEM. At the end of the event, they gave out food and raffle prizes. The prizes were USB drives, mouses and an Amazon Fire tablet.

I got a chance to sit down with Mr. Le and discuss his thoughts on the event. I asked him about his thoughts on the day. “The highlight of the day, in my opinion, was teaching students Java programming.” I asked him if the attendance was what he expected. “Yes, we got about 50 people.” He also told me about future plans his club has. “We will soon be going to Florida for the ‘NASA Swarmathon’ competition.” Clearly, they are doing big things. Watch out for the software development club. They mean business.
