Weather won’t hinder construction

February 13, 2019

Students at Montgomery College in Rockville are aware of the construction for the new Student Services building. The construction began during fall of 2017 and is still unfinished. During the first year of construction, everything went smoothly.

During the 2018-2019 academic year, there have been instances that altered the construction’s scheduling.

Sandra Fillipi, MC’s interim director of planning and senior campus planner, said that the record-setting rains in the last year “delayed construction by almost two months.”

The construction schedule was not impacted by the recent polar vortex because the building roof was installed before the polar vortex occurred, Fillipi said. This allowed construction to continue safely during the polar vortex.

Filipi also said that the construction workers wear extra layers of clothing to keep warm during the winter.

Marcus Rosano, media relations director of Montgomery College, has claimed that overall the construction of the New Student Services Center “is going very well”.

Catherine Baugh, a project manager at Rockville’s office of facilities provided Rosano a quick summary of the construction status as of today:

§  Structural steel, concrete floor slabs, and concrete roof deck are complete.

§  Activities currently in progress

o   Framing for interior partition walls

o   Mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins

o   Elevator installation

o   Spray fireproofing

o   Installation of stairs

o   Exterior brick façade

o   Site utilities

Fillipi said that “the estimated opening date for the New Student Services Center on the Rockville Campus is Spring 2020 semester.”
