On Monday March 10th, from 4 to 5 pm, Dr. Edmund Cabellon the Interim Senior Vice President for Student Affairs came to an open Student Government Association meeting. There, they discussed various student concerns on how to improve the college experience and enrich the campus life.
Dr. Cabellon introduced his Student Enrollment Plan, an initiative meant to strengthen the experience of every MC student by the fall of 2029. He broke down this idea into four parts. First, he aims to increase enrollment to 65,000 students across all campuses. Next, the retention rates should be increased to 70 percent, and the FTEIC (First Time Ever in College) graduation rates should be increased to 35 percent. Third is strengthening student support infrastructures by ensuring every student has academic, financial, and wellness support. Lastly, Cabellon aims to deepen career development, meaning each student will understand how their academic curriculum will help their future careers.
The meeting was going relatively smoothly. Then, suddenly, the subject changed to SPIFFY, an acronym for Smart Professional Intangibles Free For You. The former student-led organization which gives clothes to students recently became an MC-led program. The founder of SPIFFY, political science Professor Gregory Sember led the organization alongside several students. However, there seemed to be a fallout between management and the school.
Several students who worked with Professor Sember voiced their displeasure for how the transition from SPIFFY being a student-led program to a school-wide program available on every campus was handled. As Professor Sember and the students left SPIFFY, MC replaced them with new management. There was extensive discussion on the subject left with some resolution, but also a lot of questions left unanswered.
Overall, the discussion addressed many student concerns while affirming what the future for the college would look like.
