Student oil paintings, ceramics and acrylics on display in the Sarah Silberman Gallery.
On April 13 the Sarah Silberman Gallery opened its doors yet again, this time catering to the Student Art Exhibition. The exhibit contains various forms of art from both fall and spring semester. Oil paintings, ceramic sculptures, lithography, acrylic painting, figure drawing and many more styles are featured, reflecting a variety of artistic ability and expression.
Former MC Art student John Folk said, “It’s hard to believe these aren’t the works of professionals.” The MC Arts Department has assembled the works of some of its finest student artists into one room, as well as a few works of their own. The subject matter ranged from abstract to political to surrealism, and even self portraits. The diverse content created a random flow throughout the gallery.
“In a sense though, any work is fundamentally a self portrait,” Montgomery College Art student Emily Meyers explained.
“It is a glimpse of the world through the artist’s eyes, translated by the artist’s brain, and rendered by the artist’s hand; how much more personal can you get than that, really?”
Meyers continued, “Creating a self-portrait forces one to look so closely at oneself, too close for comfort I think sometimes.”
Meyers is working on earning her Associate in Fine Art degree in Studio Art from the Rockville campus and from there plans to transfer to an acclaimed school of art such as Maryland Institute College of Art or School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Meyers stated,“The MC Rockville Art Department has fostered an environment rife with inspiration, infused with experience and know-how, and full of potential for artistic growth.”
This exhibit gives students the opportunity to get their artwork out and presented to a wider audience apart from the student body on campus.
The Student Art Exhibition is open until May 6 and is located inside the MC Arts Building in the Sarah Silberman Gallery. Come to see MC’s underground network of incredibly talented artists whose abilities span various artistic mediums.
