EDITOR NEEDED for 2017-2018

The Montgomery Advocate, the student-run newspaper of Montgomery College Rockville, is searching for an Editor-in-Chief for next school year (2016-2017).

We’ve had a great year at the Advocate under the leadership of Sara Monterroso. We are looking for someone to continue strong coverage of campus news, sports, and opinions. The best candidate will show a willingness to cover news from the student perspective.

She or he will:

  • be a full- or part-time student during the school year
  • protect free speech and free press, especially for students
  • encourage the expression of all students from this very diverse campus
  • have a demonstrated ability to complete tasks on deadline
  • have a strong ability to work with (and lead) students who work for the paper
  • oversee the production of news and feature reports of all sorts (text, audio and video)
  • update and maintain the mcadvocate.com website

Although no experience is necessary, the strongest candidates will:

  • have classroom, student or professional newsroom experience
  • have completed courses in any of the following areas:
    • journalism or comm studies
    • video/audio editing
    • photojournalism

The Editor is responsible for all parts of publication, from hiring assistant editors, writers, and photographers; to assigning stories and photos; to collecting advertisements; to choosing online design and other choices.
